Press Release For Immediate Release Contact: NO APRIL FOOL'S JOKE - SOME IN THE BOROUGH DO NOT BELIEVE IN PROGRESS Sinking Spring, PA -- April 1, 2009 -- While the calendar may say its April Fools Day, it is no joke that some in the borough don't believe in progress. Claiming that the money to be spent on the revitalization of Sinking Spring's downtown district is a waste, they are now working to prevent the single most important project in the borough's 96 year history. Their reasons for their position vary, but the theme is the same. The borough will enter into a spiral of limitless spending with little benefit. The investment is foolish, they say. They attempt to devalue the efforts of West Reading saying the borough nearly went bankrupt in its own revitalization project. Why do tax dollars need to be spent on this? Voters should know that these claims are far from true, and that those working on the BOSS 20/20 project have the best interests of the borough in mind. As Ed Oswald Jr., Democratic candidate for Sinking Spring Borough Council has said, "we should not be afraid of change, rather we should embrace it." Sticking to the status quo is not an option: as longtime residents know the borough has not changed much in decades. While in a way this is a good thing, it is also detrimental to us all. As municpalities to the north, south, east and west change with the times, Sinking Spring falls further behind. What does this mean? For example, businesses opt to place their businesses in Spring Township rather than Sinking Spring. Too many dollars spent by our residents go to the tax coffers of surrounding municipalities. That means we end up shortchanging ourselves. "The crux of the BOSS 20/20 project is to revitalize not only the borough's appearance, but its economy as well," Ed said. "That's what some don't realize. Yes it is going to cost the taxpayer money, but in the end the dividends it will pay will far outweigh that expense." Add to this that an overwheming majority of the project will be paid through sources other than taxpayer money, including public grants and the like, and the opposition's argument doesn't hold much water. Ed will work tirelessly as councilman to move an agenda of progress for the borough forward. At the same time, he will keep a watch on spending and ensure the public's money is not wasted on projects without any clear benefit. That is not the case here. "Fiscal responsibility is key," he concluded. Those wishing to learn more about the BOSS 20/20 project should visit www.boss2020.org. More on Ed's campaign can be found at www.oswaldforcouncil.com.
